Introduction
In recent decades, the United States’ position as a global hegemon has been challenged by a series of events and processes, both domestic and international. Whereas the twentieth century closed under the banner of the “end of history” and American economic and military supremacy, the twenty-first century has seen the rise of new powers, a multipolar international system, and a set of structural crises that are testing both the world order and the country’s internal stability.
The United States is a nation at a crossroads. Global competition with China, the return of tensions with Russia, and the spread of wars and chaos have brought U.S. geopolitics back onto uncertain, treacherous terrain. At the same time, political polarization, widening economic inequality, and identity-driven social tensions are weakening internal cohesion, fueling divisions that constrain the country’s ability to pursue unified and coherent policies.
The aim of this book is to explore and analyze the complexities of the United States’ geopolitical situation, outlining both the internal sources of crisis and the external challenges that together project an image of declining global influence. From confrontation with emerging great powers to domestic difficulties linked to economic inequality and the erosion of the American way of life, what emerges is an increasingly stressed system in which the lack of internal cohesion and strategic clarity stands in stark contrast to the days when Washington set the rules of the world order.
These pages are an attempt to understand the United States from a global perspective, assessing possible trajectories for its future path, guided by a fundamental question: how much longer can the United States sustain its status as a global superpower in a rapidly changing world where the international order seems to be yielding ever more space to chaos? And further: how real—and how deep—is its decline, and if decline it is, is it truly irreversible?
We will begin this journey into U.S. geopolitics by analyzing the foundations of an empire that today appears to show the cracks of a greatness beginning to waver.
